Connacht became a professional rugby province in 1996 when the Irish Rugby Football Union established four provincial franchises to compete in the newly formed Interprovincial Championship, allowing the western province to develop elite players and compete at the highest level. The province progressed from amateur status to becoming a key part of Irish rugby's professional structure, eventually joining international competitions like the Celtic League (now United Rugby Championship) in 2001.
