Connacht became a professional rugby province in 1997 when the Irish Rugby Football Union established four regional teams to compete in the Celtic League, transitioning from the amateur Connacht Branch structure. This professionalization was part of Irish rugby's modernization following the 1995 Rugby World Cup and enabled the western province to compete against other professional regions in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.
