Connacht became a professional rugby team in 1996 when the Irish Rugby Football Union established four professional provinces to compete in the newly formed Celtic League. The western Irish province rapidly developed its infrastructure and player development systems, culminating in winning the Heineken Cup in 2016, which was considered one of rugby's greatest underdog triumphs.
