Connacht joined the top flight of Irish rugby in 2003 when they were incorporated into the newly formed Celtic League alongside other Irish provinces. The western province had previously competed in the All-Ireland League but gained professional status and entered European competition through the Celtic League structure. Connacht has since remained a permanent fixture in the top-tier United Rugby Championship (formerly Pro14/Celtic League).
