Ulster is one of Ireland's four provincial rugby unions, founded in 1879, and won the interprovincial championship multiple times before the modern era. The province achieved major success by winning the Celtic League in 1999 and reaching European Cup finals, with their greatest triumph being the 1999 European Cup victory when they defeated Colomiers in the final, establishing themselves as a top-tier European rugby force.
