Connacht became Ireland's fourth professional rugby province in 1996, joining Leinster, Munster, and Ulster in the professional era. The province competed in the Celtic League (now United Rugby Championship) from its inception in 1999 and has developed into a competitive team, winning the Pro12 title in 2016, their first major professional trophy.
