Connacht became a professional rugby team in 1996 when the Irish Rugby Football Union established four provincial professional contracts to compete in the newly formed Celtic League. The province had previously operated as an amateur union, competing in the All-Ireland League, before transitioning to full professional status alongside Leinster, Munster, and Ulster.
