The Ireland rugby captain is selected by the head coach in consultation with senior management and must be a player currently contracted to a professional Irish province or approved club. The selection considers leadership qualities, experience, and player respect, with the IRFU maintaining final approval. There are no strict eligibility criteria beyond being an eligible Ireland international.
