Ireland's second row position has featured intense competition between players like Paul O'Connell, Malcolm O'Kelly, Donnacha Ryan, and more recently James Ryan and Tadhg Beirne, who have competed for starting berths throughout different eras. The position has traditionally been a strength for Irish rugby, with O'Connell's dominance from 2004-2015 being a particularly notable period of excellence and consistency at lock.
